How to Use Answer Option Types in Quizell

Introduction

The way your answer options look changes how people experience your quiz. A visual product question feels very different from a quick yes/no, and Quizell lets you match the format to the moment. With answer option types, you can turn the same set of answers into tappable tabs, image cards, a searchable dropdown, and more — so every question is as clear and engaging as it can be.
This guide covers the five option types, how to switch between them, and how to lay them out and style them.

Where to find option types

In the editor, open a question page and click the answer options element (for example, Tab Options) in the right panel

At the top of the options panel, open the option type dropdown

You'll see five types: Selection Control, Image, Dropdown, Tab, and Icon.

The five option types

Selection Control

A familiar form-style layout, with a selectable control (like a radio button) next to each label. This is a natural fit when you want an unmistakable single-select feel and a clear "this is what I picked" state.

Image

Turns each answer into a visual card with an image above the label — ideal for product choices, styles, or anything people decide with their eyes. You control the image width and height, how many appear per row (up to 4), and the space between them.

A compact menu that keeps long answer lists tidy. You can add a placeholder and even enable search within the list, so people can filter to their answer quickly — perfect for questions with many options.

Tab

Clean, tappable buttons — a great all-purpose choice for short text answers. Tabs work well laid out in a grid or stacked in a single column, and they support an “Other” option for free-form answers (also available for Icon options).

Icon

Pairs a small icon or image with each label, adding a visual cue while staying compact. It's a nice middle ground when full image cards would be too big but plain text feels flat.

How to change the option type

Select the question’s answer options element in the right panel
Open the option type dropdown at the top of the panel
Pick a type — your options instantly re-render in that style, and the panel title changes (e.g., Tab Options, Image Options)

Your answer text carries over, so you can try different types without rebuilding the question.

Managing your answer options

In the options panel, you can:

Add options with Add Option
Edit an option’s text inline
Reorder options by dragging the handle
Delete an option with the × icon
Turn on Include “Other” option (Tab and Icon) to let people write in their own answer
Turn on Multiple Answers to let people pick more than one option
Turn on Shuffle Options to show the options in a random order

Under Advanced design controls, you can set the typeface, font weight, text size, style, alignment and colors for your options.

Arranging your options

Number of columns — how many options sit side by side (1–3, or up to 4 for Image options)
Space between — spacing between image options
Use separate Mobile Arrangement — turn this on to give mobile its own layout, so a grid on desktop can become a single column on smaller screens

Styling your options

Open Advanced design controls to style your options:

Text Settings — typeface, font weight, text size, font style, alignment, and text color for the default and selected states
Option settings (e.g., Tab Settings) — border, corner shape, border weight, and color for the default and selected states, so people clearly see their selection
Spacing — padding inside each option

Some types add their own controls:

Image — image width and height under Image Settings
Dropdown — placeholder text and the Search text in dropdown list toggle

Choosing the right type

A clear, single-select form feel → Selection Control
Visual choices (products, styles, looks) → Image
Long lists of answers → Dropdown
Short text answers → Tab
Compact options with a visual cue → Icon

Best practices

Match the type to the content. Visual decisions deserve Image options; long lists belong in a Dropdown.
Set a clear selected state. A distinct selected color reassures people their choice registered.
Keep image sizes consistent so image cards line up cleanly.
Check mobile. If your grid feels cramped on phones, turn on Use separate Mobile Arrangement.
Use the “Other” option (Tab and Icon) only when a write-in answer genuinely adds value.

Important notes

The “Other” option is available for Tab and Icon options.
Search within the list is a Dropdown feature.
Switching types keeps your answer text, but type-specific styling (like image sizes) applies only to the relevant type.
