How to Test Your AI Sales Agent (Preview Mode)

Introduction

Before you put your AI Sales Agent in front of real visitors, it's worth running through it yourself. Quizell's preview mode lets you chat with your agent exactly as a customer would — so you can check the welcome message, the quiz flow, and how it answers questions.

Best of all: testing in preview mode is completely free. It doesn't consume any of your engagement credits, so you can iterate as much as you like before going live.

This guide shows you how to test your agent, what to check, and how changes flow through to your live site.

Step-by-step guide

1. Open the preview

  • In the AI Agent Editor, look at the preview panel on the right (it appears on both the Basic settings and Design tabs)
  • Click the agent trigger button — the prompt reads "Click on the agent button to see the preview"

The chat window opens and your agent greets you, just as it would a real visitor.

2. Run through the conversation

Interact with the agent the way a customer would:

  • Read the welcome message — confirm it's the greeting you set
  • If a quiz is connected, the agent asks its questions; the answer options appear as tappable tabs. Work through them and check the flow makes sense
  • Type messages into the message field to test how the agent handles questions — this is where your Instructions and FAQ show their work

3. Check it against your training

Use the preview to confirm everything you set up behaves as intended:

  • Welcome message — correct and on-brand
  • Quiz flow — questions appear in the right order (remember: in beta the agent reads questions in their natural order, since jump logic isn't supported)
  • Instructions — the agent stays on-topic and follows your rules
  • FAQ — common questions get accurate answers
  • Design — colors, bubbles, and layout look the way you styled them

4. Make changes and re-test

If something's off, head back to Basic settings, Design, or Train, make your edit, and preview again.

  • Changes appear instantly in the dashboard and preview
  • On your live website, allow up to 5 minutes for changes to appear — the live widget refreshes on a 5-minute cache

That's it!

You've tested your agent and confirmed it's ready for visitors. 🎉

What happens next

Once you're happy with how the agent performs in preview:

  • Connect it to your website using the Connect AI agent to your website button to go live
  • Keep an eye on real conversations in your Analytics

Best practices

  • Test like a real customer, not a developer. Ask vague questions, change your mind, and try the things you don't expect visitors to do — that's where agents stumble.
  • Run the full quiz at least once to confirm every question and option behaves correctly.
  • Re-test after every change to training or design before you assume it's fixed.
  • Iterate freely. Preview testing is free, so there's no cost to refining until it feels right.
  • Do a final live check after connecting — and remember the 5-minute cache before judging whether a change "didn't work."

Important notes

  • Preview testing from the dashboard does not use engagement credits. Credits are only consumed by real conversations on your live site.
  • Changes are instant in the dashboard and preview, but the live widget has a 5-minute cache — allow up to 5 minutes for updates to appear on your site.
  • The AI Sales Agent is in beta: jump logic and custom quiz elements (images, dropdowns, etc.) aren't supported yet, so the preview reflects how the live agent behaves — questions in natural order, options shown as tabs.

Troubleshooting

The preview is blank

  • Click the agent button inside the preview panel to open the chat.

My live agent doesn't match the preview

  • The live widget caches for 5 minutes. Wait a few minutes, then hard-refresh your site.
  • Confirm you clicked Save Changes after editing.

The quiz questions appear in the wrong order

  • Jump logic isn't supported in beta — the agent reads questions in their natural order. Connect a quiz without jump logic.

Am I being charged credits while testing?

  • No. Preview testing is free. Engagement credits only apply to live conversations with real visitors.
